Loneliness
The downs about loneliness
An essay by Harry Staley
8th grade English

November 22, 2010
Being lonely is a very harsh feeling which nobody wants to undergo. It is a very dull part of life but everybody goes through it at least a couple of times in their life. I know that being lonesome is a terrible feeling and that when I feel lonely I need someone to cheer me up. Being lonely is pretty rough but it is something that comes with life.
Have you ever pondered running away from home because you were lonely? When Dill lived with his mother, who had a new husband, he was deserted almost every day, because he had no one to interact with. Dill was so lonesome that he decided to run away from home, and go to Jem and Scouts house. When Dill arrived he said to Mr. Finch, “Mr. Finch, don’t tell Aunt Rachel to make me go back, please sir! I’ll just, run off again,” when Dill said this it made me think, this kid really hates where his home is. When dill first arrived at Jem and scouts house it was an extravagant surprise, because he was completely unexpected. When Jem and scout first noticed Dill they didn’t think it was Dill, They thought he was a snake.  Jem and Scout were quite nervous until, “a filthy brown package shot from under the bed.” After all of the excitement was complete Dill told them the story of why he came because he felt he was unwanted.
The feeling of loneliness is not necessarily a noble feeling. I strongly dislike being lonely because it doesn’t bring any excitement to my life. When there is no action going on around me that is when I normally get into trouble because I get hyper and want to stir up some action. I get lonely all of the time and when there is nothing to do I always end up breaking something or getting into some serious trouble. When I get lonesome I try as hard as I can to think of the great times I’ve had over the summer, like when me and my mate Tony did backflips into enormous packs of red jelly fish and nervously laughing in pain. In those terrible times of isolation these thought are a great way to remember that I am not always secluded. I always love to think about those foolish times and wonder how terrible that could of ended up but thinking how lucky we are. Being abandoned is a very terrible but everyone has that feeling and moves right through it.
Being lonely really is a terrible feeling and absolutely nobody enjoys it because it is a rotten feeling. Jem definitely felt the same way and I don’t blame him because it is just the worst. If I were in the same situation he was I would have probably done the same thing. Being lonely is a very awful feeling.

Growing
Is growing a bad thing or a good thing
An essay by Harry Staley
8th grade English
Pine Point School
November 4, 2010
I sometimes enjoy growing because if we didn’t grow we would all be small and the world would be boring. Growing is a spectacular way to experience life. Without growing life would be a lot more boring because we would not know all of the things humans know today. Humans need to grow because if we didn’t life would be a huge disaster. Everybody in life needs to grow.
Growing up is a big part of everybody’s life because growing up means that you slowly begin to mature. If you mature to fast you can experience pain. It’s a different type of growing but it is called having growing pains. In To Kill a Mockingbird Jem grows up when he reads to Mrs. Dubose, the mean old lady who made fun of Atticus. Jem grows up in this section of the book because Atticus, his father, tells him that Mrs. Dubose died. When she dies Jem realizes that there’s more to life than just going outside and just hanging around. I believe that everyone in the world should grow up like Jem did and we will all learn from our mistakes, In this instance Jem didn’t make a mistake he just became connected to someone and then lost them. Growing up may be a very hard part of your life but everyone does it and everyone lives through it.
Growing up is a great part of life but it can get annoying? The one thing that I think will be the most annoying thing when grow up is not having my mom or dad picking up after me. That’s going to be a very interesting point in my life. I know when I am old enough to live on my own I will look back on that day when my mom or dad would pick up all of my clothes that were on the floor. Growing up has its ups and downs but everybody does it.

Interesting Facts about Atticus and My Dad
Do you know everything about your father?
An essay by Harry Staley
Pine Point School
November 1, 2010
Did you ever wonder about your parents and what they were like in their younger years? I did wonder that, and I found out a really cool fact about my dad that I didn’t know before. When Atticus killed Tim Johnson Jem and Scout were very surprised that his own father was an amazing marksman. Scout, Jem, and I all had the same reactions when we were told something interesting about someone we know well.
(TS) Atticus amazes his children when he kills the mad dog, Tim Johnson, with one shot, because they didn’t know their father could shoot. (SD) Jem and Scout can’t believe what they’ve just seen and heard, because they thought their father was an old, boring man who just sat around and read law, but the second Atticus fired the rifle; his children realized that there was more to Atticus than they knew. (CM)When Atticus took the rifle the sheriff told him it was a, “one shot deal.” (CM)Then, in what seemed like hours actually took seconds, as Atticus smoothly shot Tim Johnson, and when the dog dropped, It was clear that Tim Johnson was dead. (SD)Although they thought Atticus was a boring old man, Jem and Scout discover that he was a very good marksman. (CM) when Atticus was younger he was known as, “ol’ one shot Finch.” According to Miss Maudie, “if he shot fifteen times and hit fourteen doves he’d complain about wasting ammunition.” (CM)Now that Atticus is older he doesn’t hunt anymore but he never even told Jem or Scout about his talent. (CS) There is more to Atticus Finch than an old man who sits around all day reading law because if you really learn about him you would know that he is actually a very interesting guy.
(TS)When I asked my dad to tell me an interesting story about himself he really had to think about it but when he gave me the answer I didn’t believe him. (SD) When he did respond to my question he said that when he was thirty three he went on a business trip to Rome and that’s where he met Bowie Kuhn.(CM)  Bowie Kuhn was the commissioner of MLB baseball. (CM) My dad worked with Bowie on his trip and Bowie asked my dad to stay in Rome and assist him in raising money for a new hospital. (SD) The hospital would only be made if my dad and Bowie asked many people in Rome for money. (CM) My dad did raise the money for the hospital but he lost contact with Bowie Kuhn who is no longer the commissioner of baseball. (CS)My dad does many jobs like this now but I think working with someone with Bowie’s famousness makes my dad’s work cool.
As you can see there is more to people than just what you know about them. Scout and Jem would have never known that there father wasn’t a great marksman until the incident with Tim Johnson. I don’t think I would have ever known that my father was close with the commissioner of baseball unless I sat down and asked him what are some interesting facts about him. Jem Scout and I now know something knew about our fathers but there still might be more to them than we know.

Crying
Crying, a bad thing or a good thing
An Essay by Harry Staley
8th grade English
Pine Point School
October 17, 2010
Crying is a very powerful emotion that is shown when someone is sad or happy. When you are sad I consider crying to be a bad thing. When you are happy crying is a good thing. In the book To Kill A Mockingbird Jem cries because a tree that was very important to him was destroyed by Mr. Radley.
(TS)Crying is a very distinct way of showing your emotions. (SD)Whenever I see somebody weeping I automatically assume something is wrong that very moment. (CM) Every once in a while, you will notice someone crying because they are either sad or happy. (CM) Crying is not necessarily a bad thing but depending on what mood you are in it is a very strong emotion. (SD) Crying is a very hard thing to get through when you are stressed and are very sad. (CM) Whenever I am very sad and stressed out I calm down and take a shower, which seems to calm me. (CM) I don’t exactly know what about taking a shower calms me, but whatever it is really seems to work. (CS) Crying can be a terrible feeling, but it is still ok to cry.
(TS)Crying signifies an emotion brought about by either great happiness or sadness, when people feel joyful or endure misery . (SD) Mrs. Iacoi, my art teacher, cries when she is touched by emotional ninth grade speeches or meaningful assemblies. (CM)Usually she is not the only one crying at these times, because other adults cry along with her. (CM)Mrs. Iacoi might be happy now but in a short while she might be weeping because she misses them (SD) On the other hand crying implies sorrow. For example, in To Kill A Mockingbird Jem cries when he finds that the hole in the tree has been filled in with cement. (CM)When he notices the cement he automatically becomes sad, but his sister scout gives him encouragement and says, “come on Jem don’t cry please don’t cry.” (CM) The second Jem got home he attempted to hold himself back, but he just couldn’t do it. (SD) Crying is a very strong emotion that can be used in a few different ways, unfortunately Jem didn’t cry in the happy way.
Whenever I think of someone crying I think of a person weeping because they are sad. What some people do not always remember is that sometimes people cry because they are happy. I don’t think crying is a bad thing at all. Nobody likes to cry but at one point if every one’s life they will.

Feestyle writing

Today was a pretty good day. I had a field trip! It was a lot of fun, because I got to speak Spanish when we were in the exhibit. When we were in the art exhibit they spoke Spanish to teach us about the countries the pieces of art were from. Right now I am watching TV it is boring, so I just turned it off so now I am writing. I can’t wait till Halloween it will be so much fun! I will get the mother lode of candy it will be delicious. My favorite type of candy is probably coconut patties. They are so good; if I had a room full of them they would be gone. I also like food. I eat so much food that sometimes I think I’m fat. I know I’m not fat, I’m far from it! Well my fifteen minutes of free writing is almost up so I will post this shortly. When I finish this I will post on my reading blog and then relax because I have all my homework done. Well I am done so bye.

(CM) After Boo committed the terrible crime he wiped the blood off on his leg and he resumed his cutting. (CM) Boos mother ran outside screaming, “Arthur is killing them all.” (CS)Evan though Boo is a pretty messed up kid I think he will turn himself around.

After a long while Boo's brother Nathan emerged from the darkness of their home and he was still a frightening child. I think Boo should follow in his brother’s footsteps and go outside. He could always snap back to the way he was before but I think if he stays with the right crowd he will stay normal. Boo has made some decisions that will stay with him his entire life and he will have to live with that but he is still a human and should be respected like anyone else.

The Wind
The different sides of the wind and I
An essay by Harry Staley
8th grade English
Pine Point School
October 4, 2010
By: Harry Staley
Nothing can stop the flow of the wind as it changes direction and strength, but rarely stops moving. On one hand, the wind pounds strongly during a storm when the waves are crashing against the rocks. On the other hand, the wind blows very beautifully on a cold fall day when the leaves are falling. It can even scoop down and grab a leaf off the ground and throw it around the yard, while the leaf becomes part of the wind and soars and glides like a plane.  I am like the wind because I like to keep moving.
(TS) The wind blows strongly and sometimes dangerously, but for the most part it moves soft and graciously. (SD) I am gusty like the wind. (CM) The wind wafts around the world without stopping once; it might slow down, but the wind currents are always still traveling. (CM) Like the wind, I never stop. (SD) I cruise around the school energetically trying to accomplishing what I can to get to where I need to be while traveling around the halls and walkways.  (CM) Sometimes the wind can cause damage by taking my paper and scattering them around campus.  (CM) The papers soar like a white dove in the violent breeze. (SD) The gusty wind blows in many different directions as the day goes on. (CM)I feel that sometimes I will blow in many different directions as the day goes on and I learn new things (CM) Sometimes when I am inside of a class I feel the energy building up inside me like the trees rustling in the wind. (CS) I am like the wind.
At the end of some days the wind might slowly slow down. At the end of my days I slowly become tired and go to sleep. The winds strong puffs will slowly become a soft breeze and turn into a little waft of wind brushing against your skin. Once you are in bed sleeping the wind might start up again, but it also might become even softer. After your long day at school you start to fad,e and the wind also starts to fade

(CM) I didn’t know what to think except for, what he is doing or, what is wrong with him. (CS) Of course Ian and I became close friends over the summer and now I miss his tied up face.
(TS) Ian is truly the weirdest person I know, but he is still my friend. (SD) Now that the summer is over I kind of miss his creepy looking tied up face. (CM) It looked all mangled up and his lips were all separated and contorted. (CM) He was pretty funny while he did it too. (SD) I don’t understand why he did it but when he did he cracked up every one. (CM) Some people had to leave the room from laughing so hard. (CM) He even laughed hard too. (SD) Sailing with him was the biggest pain in the neck. (CM) whenever I was steering the boat I had to try to collect myself so I wouldn’t run into anything. (CM) Keeping my self-calm didn’t always work, and whenever I asked him to stop he would say, “I don’t know what you’re talking about.” (CS) Evan though he was a pain in the butt at some time he was the weirdest funny kid I’ve ever met.

Essaay # 3

Metaphor essay #3
Wind
By: Harry Staley
(TS) Wind is strong and sometimes dangerous but for the most part it is soft and gracious. (SD) I am gusty like wind. (CM) The wind goes around the world without stopping once, it might slow down but it is always still going. (CM) Like me I don’t stop ever I flow all around the school accomplishing what I can. (SD) Wind can sometimes be a pain. (CM) I am a pain sometimes to but unlike wind I will not take your papers and throw them on the ground. (CM) The wind can also interrupt a sport. (SD) The wind blows in many different directions. (CM)In life I will be making my way to different places and meeting new people. (CM) The wind will skip around different places and also run into new people. (CS) I am much like the wind in many different ways.

A Strange person
By: Harry Staley
9/27/10
(TS) Weirdness could be a good thing or a bad thing. (SD) I know some people who are very weird. (CM) Some of the people I know are very strange but in a good way. (CM) a lot of people I know are strange in a bad way. (SD) Strangeness is a good thing to me. (CM) I think being strange is another way of being unique.  (CM) Being yourself is what it’s all about, it may be weird but that’s ok. (SD) I know a young boy who is very strange. (CM) His name is Ian. Ian is strange because he likes to tie his face up with rope. (CM) I think this is strange because to most people would find it painful. (CS) Ian is a very strange boy but that is just who he is and he can’t change that.
(TS) In my life I have meet many weird and strange people. (SD) Out of all these people there was one that really stood out to me. (CM) His name is Ian and he likes to tie his face up with a rope. (CM) I think this is strange because to most people this would hurt, but to Ian it is an amusing event he likes to do. (SD) When I first meet Ian he was acting very strange, so strange I tried to stay away from him. (CM) I couldn’t stay away from him for long because after a couple minutes I was forced to sail with him. (CM) It was the most outrageous sail of my life. (SD)With every line on the boat he tried to tie his face up. (CM) I don’t exactly know how he did it but he did and I was amazed. Final countdown final polished copy

Final Countdown draft 2
(TS) Like most kids I love summer, because you get to relax and hang out with your friends. (SD)When I hear the final countdown by Europe I realize my days of freedom are coming to an end. (CM) Summer is great but it doesn’t always last forever, which is why I enjoy it while it lasts. (CM) During the summer you need to keep up with all your work you did in the school year, so you don’t forget. (SD) If summer went on forever we would all lose interest in it. (CM) It might be fun, but it is something to enjoy when it is here, don’t get me wrong I love summer its just the harder you work in the school year the more rewarding your summer will be. (CM) Summer has to end sometime and then you have to go back to school. (SD) School could also give you the best memories. (CM) Without school there would be nobody you know to hang out with you on those hot days when you want to go to the beach. (CM)I still think that going to school is a good time and a bad time. (CS) Either way going back to school is a big countdown.

(TS)   When summer ends, don’t you always think about how great the next one will be? (SD) After a summer ends, it takes a while to get back in the swing of things back at school. (CM) It might be frustrating and also very annoying. (CM) You should always think of that one day that you were lying on the warm soft sand thinking I might never go back to school. (SD) It will always be hard to get back to school with all the changes in you’re day. (CM) I hate the feeling of coming back to school. (CM) I do not like waking up early to do work, and I don’t like when summer ends to me it’s a big count down. (SD In the summer time, “all that’s said will be done.” (SD) It is so sad when all of you’re summer friends go back to where they live to begin school. (CM) Knowing that you won’t see them for a whole year, you hang out with kids from school. (CM) Then you start a whole new bond which lasts forever. (CS) Summer is one of the greatest times of your life and the harder you work in school the better the time you’ve earned is.
(TS) Summer is a great time of year. (SD) I think summer is a great time of year but, if it was any longer I think we would all lose interest in it. (CM) Summer is great but if it was any longer we would get bored with it. (CM) I don’t think having a boring summer would be fun. (SD) On those days in the summer when you wake up and think, I don’t have to rush anything. (CM) There is absolutely nothing to get done in the summer except for your summer work, which would only take a couple days if you really buckled down. (CM) Once all the summer work is done you have the rest of the summer to relax and enjoy what’s left. (SD) When summer begins to come to an end The last thing you want to think about is school. (CM) Although you don’t want to think about it, it has to be there in you’re mind. (CM) If you totally forget about school that’s when you start to forget about what you need and you cant to that. (CS) Although the summer can be great it will be very stressing to, and that big countdown will always be ticking.

Self assessment one thing I have trouble with while writing is sticking to the topic. A strong piece of my essay is how all the words flow together. One of my weaknesses is making sure the grammar and spelling is correct. Self grade = B+.

free writing #2

The pool is closing. Today we are closing the pool. It is just to cold to go in. At the begining of the summer it was very warm and refreshing. No it is just cold and gives me the chills just looking at it. The hot tub will be open all year though. That never gets cold. I like living in the basement. It is nice and cool and super quiet at night. I think having a plasma down here makes it. I call it the man cave. When i get home from school i go to the man cave, When i am doing homework im in the man cave. The only way to get into my man cave is you have to be a man or you need speciel permision. The man cave isnt anything to joke about. We stay up to the crack of dawn watching tv and playing fooseball. If you cant take it youre not allowed. I am pretty tired now. In the man cave there is a couch a big couch pointed trwards the plasma screen tv the big plasma screen tv. If you take ten steps youre in my room a small room but i have the biggest of my two sisters. They missed out.

Freestyle Writing

There are people all around some talking some working. I’m thinking of what to write. I don’t have much homework tonight, and Ben just stole Alexander’s computer kind of funny. Now he is on Alexander’s gmail Mrs. Owen came over to straiten out the problem, she gave Ben ten seconds on the computer Alexander counts down, ten, nine, eight, Ben rushes, Mrs. Owen said she wants to crack the whip. This assignment is fun but it will be ruined by the three math problems I have after this darn. I will get over it at least its not a hundred. Now I hear the clicking of the keyboard the faster I type the faster it goes. Alexander is sitting right next to me and Kolton is next to him. I have soccer after school should be pretty fun. I wonder what team I made, o well I don’t really care as log as I get to play. My toes always hurt went I play soccer probably from when I toe bash the soccer ball multiple times a day. Last year my toe would bleed I hope it doesn’t do that. I just cracked my knuckles, and ms rice just asked Kolton to go get his math book that he left in her room after math class. That was so fun Kolton just kept making me Daniel and David laugh he is hilarious. Alex just asked how much longer and I only have five more minutes. This is awesome I want to do this more often, its easy and I get to say what’s on my mind pretty awesome now I’m running out of things to say. What should I say, I don’t know I only have two minutes left. Any way so this is awesome I feel like singing write now ha-ha, I’m so weird but I like who I am, one more minute I am almost done I am done going to go do Spanish and math now, bye.
